An exploration of both shape and light, Spiral Helix is comprised of square-shaped bars that rotate around a central axis in increasing increments. Such rotation gives visual momentum to the work successfully creating the illusion of a form moving through space. Such illusion also softens the geometric and linear qualities of both the individual bars and overall form, granting the sculpture a more organic quality. Sculptors have experimented with a wide variety of synthetic materials like plastic and acrylic for generations. However, Shotz's aforementioned use of shape creates a highly engaging use of light and, by extension, color. Her choice of the dichroic acrylic material reflects different wavelengths of light in the environment depending on time of day, ambient light, and the angle from which the sculpture is viewed. As a result, it is not just the object but also the surrounding environment that is energized.
