WILD HORSES by Kathy Wise - Intarsia Wood Art THIS ENTRY IS FOR SALE; "Wild Horses" is a colorful stampede of eight Red and White Paint horses. This large outstanding wood intarsia wall sculpture is made of 1" to 2" thick Cherry, Aspen, Ebony and Maple. The base is Dark Wenge and Black Walnut giving the piece a beautiful contrasting effect of the White aspen and lovely grained Cherry Wood. Clear stain varnish enhances the natural color of the wood. The eyes are black ebony and holly with wire eyelashes. It is 23 feet by 6 feet tall and has 2750 pieces. There are 17 small animals hidden in the grass along the Black Walnut foreground with both carving and wood burned details. The bronze prairie dogs peeking out of the concert holes at the front of the piece were also sculpted by Kathy. This will be my largest intarsia piece to date with my previous one measuring at 6 feet by 12 feet and over 1500 pieces. My Wild horses sculpture embodies the free spirit of the noble horse. Over time, the relationship evolved between man and horse. They offered man everything from transportation, status, companionship, and the mechanism for dominance in combat. Ever since the dawn of human history, horses have held a mystical sway over our imagination: we respect and revere them like no other animal. Long before the invention of writing and the wheel, horses began to shape the way humans lived. All we have today would not have been possible without the beautiful wild horse. Intarsia (ĭntär'sēə) is an early 13th century Italian Art form of wood inlay. Intarsia is created by selecting different types of wood, using its natural grain patterns and colors to create the different colors in the pattern. A paper pattern is glued to the wood and each piece is cut out using a scroll saw. Pieces are shaped with a drum sander and details are carved in. Additional pieces of plywood are used to raise areas of the design to create more depth. Then every piece is mop sanded before fitting them together like a jig-saw puzzle and gluing them to a plywood backing. Once together, a clear satin varnish is hand applied .
