Totem (2014)

Totem (2014) is the second in a series of large, welded steel sculptures based off of small bronze castings. Relic (2013), my Art Prize entry for 2013 was the first. The process begins as an exploration of various shapes utilizing chunks of wax that are randomly cut from blocks of casting wax. Once an interesting shape has developed the piece is sent to the foundry and cast in bronze. After a clean-up in the sandblaster the unnamed piece was sitting on a table when a casual observer remarked that it looked like a Totem he had seen in the Pacific Northwest. The name stuck.
