Dreamfusion

Pierce Helmic

Dreamfusion creates a unique visual landscape by showcasing two diverse art forms—fine art photography and fused glass. Spanning the disparate locations of Maui and Joshua Tree, Dreamfusion is the combined effort of fine art photographer Wayne Thomas Pierce and fused glass artist Mary Alice Helmic. Collaboration began when Helmic discovered Pierce’s dream-like images of an orchid and cactus bloom. Captured in natural light using macrophotography, Pierce’s botanicals revealed a range of intense colors and organic shapes. In reaction, Helmic chose stained glass and dichroic materials based on colors, shapes, and luminescence in the images. When combined in the heat of a local kiln, what emerged was a fused glass piece energized by both the tropical orchid and the desert cactus. A triptych was created whose elements were in conversation with each other. Dreamfusion portrays the power of the ekphrastic art process, in which a new work of art is created in response to an existing art form.
