In my latest series entitled Elevate I want to present an abstract representation of the structure of elevators, the experience of riding in one, and the buildings they reside in. I routinely ride elevators, and often experience the chaotic atmosphere of a crowded elevator as well as the awkward silence associated with riding one. They are a means of transportation and in that obligation a temporary community is created. This series is a reflection of my experiences. For example, my piece entitled Paths is an abstract depiction of the act of crossing paths with a person. Another example of the inevitable customs that come with elevator use is found in Informed, which depicts the act of eaves dropping. Even the negative space has significance through its representation of interior buttons. By layering the individual pieces of wood vertically a city skyline is created. For this series I chose to work with oil and pen.
