Fleurs et rivière

David Dodde's avatar David Dodde

What you are looking at is a temporary art installation using La Grande Vitesse (Alexander Calder, 1969) as the substrate. Fleurs et rivière (flowers and river) is a mash-up of artistic expression and technical execution. I started Fleurs et rivière by painting each flower and leaf on paper using india ink. I then digitized the imagery using a combination of software and hardware to maintain the natural look of the brush strokes. Next, 27 sheets of white PVC foam board were cut meticulously using a water jet process. 1,500 magnets were divided and hand applied to the back of the 94 individual objects. The combined pulling force of the magnets is almost 26,000 lbs. The end result is 18 flowers and 39 leaves, many hand-cut to fit, benignly clinging to the surface of one of the most important pieces of art in my life. With absolute care and love, Fleurs et rivière is my homage to one of the greatest minds in art. Thank you Alexander Calder, your lessons were not lost on me.
