The Red Gate

Jennifer Miller's avatar Jennifer Miller

This painting is of a beautiful old Korean gate with a secret garden behind the brick and stone walls. I love the deep vibrant reds and cool turquoise colors in old Korean architecture. The black clay tiles used on the roof and the walls take on amazing warmth and color variation over years and even centuries. I am also inspired by the overlay of geometric patterns in the wall and gate against the swirling freedom of leaves and trees. I hope that simple scenes of Korea like this one will show the viewer some of the rich history, artistic architecture, and the harmony with nature one can find in Korea's old palaces and monastaries.
