Cactus #2

This assemblage began by collecting dead Christmas light strings. Six years ago, I felt a strange sense of guilt doing the usual thing you do with dead light strings, throw them away. So I began collecting them, not really knowing what I was going to with them. After years of collecting, the answer was obvious, a cactus! I then began searching for found objects I could use to build the structure. For the form I found screws, brackets, and thick cardboard tubes in a factory's dumpster. I used an old blown sub woofer for the base/foot. Then wrapped it with the dead strings of Christmas lights. For me, this piece really makes a statement about creating beauty and finding value in everyday things people overlook, take for granted, and discard never giving it a second thought. I find lots of motivation and beauty in nature. Abstracting a cactus in this way creates a fun, inviting, and interesting form with many openings for discussion about our society and how we use our resources.
