I Never Saw Another Butterfly

Grand Rapids Symphony

Throughout history, musicians and poets have captured tragedy, triumph, love, loss, joy, sacrifice and hope through their compositions. In 2013, the GR Symphony and its Youth Chorus will retell the stories of young children in Theresienstadt, a Nazi concentration camp, as told through their own poetry; honoring their creativity during confinement and courage as they faced unimaginable suffering. Combined music and poetry within I Never Saw Another Butterfly, named after a poem by Pavel Friedman, a prisoner at Theresienstadt, powerfully conveys the stark facts of history and the promise of a more hopeful future. Through this work, the Youth Chorus will sing the words of suffering children from previous generation back to the place in which they were written. In June they traveled to Prague for an emotional performance at this camp while a photographer and videographer captured images of the performance and camp. With the music, the images and video will become an ArtPrize entry
