I decided to draw horses as a tribute to the long history of human-horse relationship, a relationship so significant that the Congress recognizes horses as "living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West." So, after several trips to stockyards and ranches, and several more hours of sketching, I began work on this large-scale drawing, Burning Ranch, in which the horses' distinctive reactions to ranch fire become a metaphor for humans' diverse responses to life's challenges.
