The Combine

The above installation was inspired by my experiences in a psychiatric hospital as a teenager. The piece takes it's title from Ken Kesey's "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" which is utilized in the wall piece of the installation. For this piece I took the book itself, redacted all of the singular personal pronouns (I, me and mine) with a black sharpie marker, then digitized all of the pages with a photo scanner and printed them on a series of nine sheets. They are framed in 9 cases and presented behind a sterilized recreation of the bed that I was restrained in while a patient in the Horsham Clinic, outside of Philadelphia PA, in the summer of 1992 when I was 13 years old. The piece was first exhibited as part of my thesis exhibit at The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia in the spring of 2012.
