Why Do We Kill?

Jesse Warner's avatar Jesse Warner

Why Do We Kill is a black and white freehand illustration that examines war, gun violence and the way it touches so many lives. This work is an expression of my feelings on the violence that continues to plague our world. I started with the most infamous weapon in modern culture, the AK-47. Next I had the idea to put words in the body of the gun and that quickly transformed into the title phrase. I then translated and illustrated the word Kill in ten different languages around the gun completing the phrase in Arabic, French, Spanish, Russian, Latin, Chinese, Vietnamese, German, English and Italian. The use of many languages and the patterns surrounding them is representative of the vast numbers of people and nations afflicted. I spent over a year working on this piece finishing in February of this year, just in time for Art Prize.
