Blockhead Community

Becki Moffett-Moore's avatar Becki Moffett-Moore

In my work entitled “Blockhead Community" I am captivated by the duality of breaking down and building up. By placing the image of a human face on a constructed clay “Lego” type block I have created a different kind of literal “blockhead”, taking a derogatory word for “stupid person” and building a visual image of relationships---lovers, friends, family and community, changing the meaning from a negative (breaking down) to a positive (building up). This "piece" is a 90 degree equal lateral wall standing 66 inches high with 80 inch long sides. It is made up of 38 Ceramic stacking blocks with 62 cast faces. The entire piece weighs about 1,000 pounds.
