The encaustic sculpture titled “Sinularia Dura” reflects the integration of art and science. The subject matter is a metaphor for current inter-disciplinary research in the sciences. This work is inspired by a type of lettuce coral found on the bottom of the ocean. By using beeswax, that stands in as a material equivalent it emulates the micro and macro worlds of exploration. The intent is to forward a view that we must collectively consider these natural and biological elements as precious and worth protecting. My hope is that my body of work will resonate with the audience a feeling of primitiveness and interconnectedness with all forms of life and the elements that make existence possible.
