The massive migration of butterflies has always been a beautiful, favorite memory from my youth. Over twenty years ago, as I remembered the bountiful exodus I started cutting out different shapes from found pieces of paper such as newspapers, advertisements, envelopes, and junk mail. Responding to whatever was printed on the paper, I made each butterfly distinctly individual, like its genetics or a fingerprint, with endless iterations and subtle differences on the landscape of the paper. Over the years the scraps of paper have changed in color palettes; thickness and textures began to change too, as we have become an increasingly paperless society. These paper butterflies are a reminder to take care of the environment for the seventh generation so they, too, will be able to see these vibrant migrations.
