Traveling Plastic Factory

Thing Thing

To make a traveling plastic factory. For the last year we (four young designers) have been using hand-built machines to turn plastic recyclables from Detroit into internationally exhibited design. For ArtPrize, we are turning this process into performance that invites the public to participate by bringing their recyclable plastic waste (#1 PET) to run through our "plastic factory" - a real time transformation from trash to art. Each part of our installation is a step towards turning bottles back to a raw material that we can then use: gather, wash, dry, sort, shred, bake, make. This traveling factory is an opportunity to empower the community in the act of making and reveal the possibilities of an underutilized, inexpensive material, as well as produce artful objects. Come down to the Children's Museum, bring your pop bottles and water bottles and watch us run them through the factory!
