Wraith

Jane Hildebrand's avatar Jane Hildebrand

A certain energy is contained within this sculpture. Wraith embodies movement and transcends the static; it does not whirl but is reminiscent of the dervish. From the frontal view, one sees a driving impetuosity - it seems capable of forceful penetration while maintaining an airiness borne of its cyclonic force. Certain striations, marks of opposing vectors within the body, attest to the inherent movement. Buffeted by my manipulations as well as the temperature and pressure of the kiln, this sculpture has survived to exert a force of its own and has attained a gestural quality, almost the precursor of flight.
