Mother Teresa

Jeanne McCormick's avatar Jeanne McCormick

Mother Teresa was born and raised in Albania. Her early religious training as a Sister of Loreto and her years of teaching in India were followed by the founding of her own order, the Sisters of Charity, to work with the poorest of the poor. Her work with the destitute in India won her the Nobel Peace Prize. I first saw this particular black and white photo of Mother Teresa posted in my son's classroom. Paul Richard's photographic image stunned me, and I felt compelled to work on her portrait. Normally I would choose charcoal and pencil for black and white, and save oils for work that needed bright, rich colors. With this portrait, however, I wanted to capture her inner beauty, and deliberately chose the power of oil, hoping to move the viewer as I had been moved.
