Made of 51 pieces of scrap metal, and acrylic paints, “Awakening Abyss” is the product of the turning point in my life. After finding a brain tumor, undergoing many tests, and ultimately surgery to remove the mass, I was left with only 50 percent of my vision. In this painting of my post-surgery MRI, there is a void where the tumor and epileptic tissue was. I had no idea that losing all of this would bring me so much more. Adjusting to my new perspective was difficult at first but I soon began to see the benefit of my loss. I was awakened to all the small blessings I never saw before. I created this piece to show that although this was a life changing event, I was awakened in this abyss to how much there is to be grateful for. Instead of viewers seeing the dark space as a negative, I want them to know that I am forever changed in a very positive way. “Awakening Abyss” was a major part of my recovery and I hope it will encourage others to wake up to all the good in their lives.
