Ceramic Bowl Wall Installation

At heart, I am a potter. I love the feel of clay and various processes of working in the material. The countless methods of decorating and firing clay to a ceramic state still fascinates me after 12 years of working in the medium. The chemical changes that occur in clay and glazes through playing with fire and its need to survive, or the introduction of sodium components to a kiln atmosphere, is always amazing to me. Having grown up as the fourth child of nine in a middle-class family in rural central Illinois, we did not have a lot of “nice” things. It was instilled in me at a young age that things had to have a purpose. I make functional pots, but often in a manner that asks the viewer to see more the beauty of form and fired clay and glaze materials rather than pragmatism of the piece. Presenting bowls on the wall as modules of an installation is a manner of achieving this. Installations vary in size and composition, depending on each individual space.
