Running on Air

I think of these steel sculptures as carved air- the line of steel captures a volume that exists in the eye of the viewer- the mass is all air. I make horses because they are full of contradictions- powerful and skittish- dancing with muscle- also they have great hair. When making a large herd like this I never see the final piece until installation. Each horse is an individual but when I hang them they become part of the larger whole that is the herd. The whole process is like working with a three dimensional drawing- if I don't like a line I don't erase I can bend it. If I don't like the placement of a horse I cut him down and rearrange him- suspending and tying him to the other horses until they all fit in a flowing 3-D drawing of air.
