The Owl is guarding the key to to the clock, as if to hold back time. The opposite side is the mother owl flying away with the key in her talons signifying her fledglings growth and ability to be on their own. The three owls are grown and on their first hunt. They have set their sights on a wood cock which is narrowly escaping the sudden attack.
