I have been designing and building furniture out of reused bicycle rims, frames, and handlebars for over 20 years. This decades-long design project stemmed from a desire to recycle the inner-tubes and bent wheels accumulating at the bike shops where I worked.
I am Influenced by mid-twentieth century works of designers Marcel Brauer, Mies van der Rohe, Warren McArthur, and Charles and Ray Eames.
My Art Prize entry is a slight departure from my usual bicycle part pieces. These pieces are among the first I have done with reused motorcycle parts, and are the result of a commission in 2011 for a corporate client for a traveling motorcycle expo.
My intent for the design of these pieces was to incorporate those components of a motorcycle that are common to all motorcycles, rather than a single brand of motorcycle. As such, I can make these pieces using the parts from any motorcycle brand or type.
