Colors of Time

Nancy McKay's avatar Nancy McKay

"Colors of Time" is the result of my artist-in-residency at the Grand Canyon National Park. During this residency I focused on color - how colors change throughout the day and how colors represent layers of geologic time over the 1.8 billion year history of the canyon. I also taught park visitors to mix the canyon's colors into a palette. I used a similar palette to paint "Colors of Time". I printed the image onto silk and then hand-painted it with fine French dyes. The dye pigments are laid down through sedimentation and steaming them forms a molecular bond of color to fabric. The resulting color has depth and luminosity unlike other artistic mediums. "Colors of Time is being shown at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum to highlight the President's role in doubling the size of the Grand Canyon National Park during his presidency.
