To Be or Not to Be

This is a triple portrait of my youngest daughter, Anna, sitting in a restaurant in London. When creating this portrait I talked to her about what kind of dichotomies existed in her mind about herself. Subsequently I painted images of her to represent that discussion. Painted in one of the frames is Anna as a jogger and I portrayed her headless. She had explained that she runs with her heart, so I omitted her head to underscore that reality for her. The left frame is painted to celebrate the joy and satisfaction she takes in her friendships. The final image of her face is a truer her- the sum of both and the many parts of her. I want this piece to challenges the viewer to also contemplate, who we really are and what choices we have the opportunity to make about our lives.
