I wanted to create an artwork by which viewers could feel a part of the reason for and existence of the work and each other. I am illustrating a diverse number of people showing what they aspire to be remembered for. I wanted this work to stir an expectancy of joy and courage for life. In a 5 by 8 block presentation of 40 12”x 12” canvases painted with the portraits and words of people of various nationalities and ages, each individual painting will also contribute to a greater overall design thread throughout the color and rhythm of the larger work. I draw my models from life, and am incorporating their handwriting for the words with which they describe their imagined legacy. I chose the title Panégyrique (pah-neh-zjeh~REEq) to stand for "in praise of life." I hope this artwork surprises viewers with their own responses.
