My work has been predominantly figurative over the past 5 years. Recently, I’ve been addressing body image and gender roles in relation to the female body. I often see women being reorganized in pop culture and the media as pornographic objects that can be disposed of, sometimes violently. This obsession/fetish with the female form I believe can be simplified to a specific shape or orientation of fat. Fat in one area of the body is considered sexy, while fat in another area of the body is considered grotesque. This kind of obsession with the female body and what is feminine continues to drive my work. While reading, The Female Nude: Art, Obscenity, and Sexuality by Lynda Nead, I encountered a reoccurring theme; what is defined as beautiful or female, is weak and fragile. This idea has led me to reexamine the goals and motives that had guided my previous efforts through a new and exciting lens. By addressing women’s issues and the fetish form, I’m working to elevate something delicate
