Lithos

My 2012 Artprize entry “Lithos” is part of my Athena’s Timeline Series. My intention is to pay homage to the “makers of art” in particular, printmakers. The timeline serves as the focal point for the distinct organization required during the printing process. The materials that convert the stone into a matrix will be honored. Textures and mark making will be used to represent the grit of carborundum, the wax of a litho crayon, the tack of the ink -elements of the printing process. Each square panel will be shaped to remind us of the elegant limestone used for the plate. The physicality of pulling a lithograph will be symbolized by the repetition of wrapping coarse woven cloth around the panels and saturating the fiber with acrylic medium. Ultimately the four panels will evoke the aesthetic of the lithographer’s studio and beckon the viewer to explore the tools, materials and process.
