The Chairs Tell All
2012 ArtPrize Entry2012 is the 100th birthday of Steelcase and The Chairs Tell All is an installation comprised of 12 late 1970s vintage Steelcase office chairs that are arranged to fit a circular lobby space and allow viewers to sit in them if they choose. We have collected stories from people who work(ed) at Steelcase and applied text from these stories to the backs of the chairs. Fabric printed with images of the chairs and text hangs in panels on the walsl facing the chairs. Visitors can hear sounds of footsteps traveling to and from work among the occupants of the chairs. For more informationBecause chairs serve as witnesses to working lives everywhere we will also collect stories from viewers about their working lives – whatever they might be.
