Revitalization, expansion and renewal characterized utopian visions for American cities throughout the twentieth century. During the late 1960s, following civil rights movements, the swell of suburban sprawl and the development of ambitious highway infrastructures nationally, American cities underwent radical change. And, as the landscape of of cities underwent radical change, so did the perception of art. An expanded definition of sculpture flourished as artists began to blur boundaries that had previously determined the form, placement, and purpose of art in the public realm.
Contemporary art practices today reflect interest in capturing the socio-political issues that shape, mark, fracture, and define the architectural landscape of America’s urban centers. CITY FLUX traces a legacy of public projects in Grand Rapids from the late 1960s to today as testaments to the city’s sustained emphasis on art in the public sphere. Six emerging artists present new works that respond to the ever-changing landscape of Grand Rapids through examining possible intersections among art, architecture and city-planning.

Do you feel protected and supported by the laws enacted by your government? Artist Stacey L. Kirby offers The Bureau of Personal Belonging as a setting for such dialogue about community, civil rights and belonging. Over the past 9 years, 115 performances and over 3000 participants, Kirby has shared a series of “performative interactions” – performances set within site-specific installations that are activated by viewer participation. The Bureau is an installation comprised of three ongoing works, The Declaration Project, VALIDnation and her newest work, I AM. Visitors offer written and verbal response as they interact with Kirby and performers from Grand Rapids. Kirby critically examines governmental process and legislation (North Carolina's HB2 and Michigan's SB993 & HB5717) while imploring us to trust in the validity of our own voices and our power to make an impact on the governing bodies that shape our communities.

Coit Creative Arts Academy is the elementary ARTS school for the Grand Rapids Public Schools. The original building was built in 1880 and it is the oldest working school in Michigan. In 2002 it became an arts school. As a result, families have moved into the neighborhood specifically to send their children to Coit Creative Arts Academy. Because of this, the neighborhood is more art savvy than most others. It is conveniently located just a few blocks from the Medical Mile and within walking distance to downtown. With school budgets as they exist, being an exhibitor at Coit Creative Arts Academy is a wonderful nod to the dedication artists feel toward arts education for our children.
