Women's City Club - Exhibition Center
Venue description
The Women’s City Club is a private club and offers individual and business memberships.
The Sweet House Foundation(501 c 3) was established in 2006. Its purpose is to preserve and memorialize the history and architecture of the house where the Women's City Club resides.
Martin Sweet, the original owner of the house, was a young entrepreneur when he came to Grand Rapids in 1846. He dreamed of a distinguished and spacious home for his family and in the early 1860’s he built his home on East Fulton. This Heritage Hill two-story Italianate Villa home survives as one of the remaining examples of this style of architecture in the latter part of the 19th century.
We will offer select spaces on the Main and Lower Level along with outdoor exhibition space for appropriately sized 3D work on the NW corner of our lot.
A selection committee made up of Kendall College of Art & Design Faculty and Exhibition Staff will review all proposals.
Venue statement
Drawing upon the rich history of the Women’s City Club, we’d like to pay homage to the long history of the under-representation of women in the arts, but we’re also a venue that values inclusiveness of all artists.
We seek work that considers the blurring boundaries between conceptual, fine, and functional art, design, furniture, and architecture, while also recognizing the unique space the Sweet House offers.
Part of the Mission of the WCC is to promote educational, civic, and social activities. With this in mind, our goal is to catapult the rich history of this organization into a contemporary context, with an emphasis on educating the community and facilitating the understanding of thought-provoking work.
We'll consider submissions of high-quality contemporary artwork of any media, presented either as a single piece or grouping, that either integrates into the surroundings or redefines the space.
