Venue description Calder Plaza is a large, concrete pedestrian plaza in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids. Alexander Calder's stabile La Grande Vitesse stands at the north end. The massive warm-red sculpture was the first financially funded project by the National Endowment for the Arts in 1969. Since that time, it has become the focus of the annual Festival for the Arts every June, known to locals simply as "festival." Its distinct form has also been integrated into the logo of the City of Grand Rapids, as well as the ArtPrize logo. To the South of La Grand Vitesse the plaza is large, flat, and clear of obstructions. During events, tents, stages, or other structures are typically erected here. For ArtPrize, the space is available to use as the artist sees fit, barring certain structural limitations.
