GSA commissions American artists to create publicly scaled and permanently installed artworks for Federal Buildings nationwide. The incorporation of contemporary art within the nation's important civic spaces celebrates the best of American culture and exemplifies how democratic societies benefit immeasurably from the unique, creative talents of individual citizens. Federal Buildings are public buildings, meant to be enjoyed and utilized by the people of this nation. ArtPrize presents a unique opportunity to encourage people to visit the Federal Building and stroll the grounds to view the artwork. Welcome! We are thrilled to be an ArtPrize venue for the first time! ArtPrize is the largest art competition in the world, and we are proud that it is right in our backyard here in Grand Rapids. Our venue sees 7-8,000 visitors a day just in passenger traffic, and we hope to see familiar faces stopping, but also the daily flow of people in and out of GRR who may be here on business or visiting loved ones. Our venue is hosting seven artists who are from as close as Ada, to as far away as Mexico and New Zealand! Art is located in three locations: outdoors under our "Welcome Wall" canopy, in the east end of our terminal building near the Valet Parking ticket counter, and upstairs in our Observation Area. This is also a great spot for aviation enthusiasts since you can view art, look down on our security checkpoint, and get a view of our airfield operations. Stop by and see us, and don't forget to vote for your favorite artists!!

This year we also have one of the oldest participants in ArtPrize, Stuart Knickerbocker, a World War II veteran and local artist. We are proud to have him and 48 local and national artists displaying their work with us, most of whom will be on hand to answer questions and interact at various times with the public during ArtPrize.

The 300 foot layered sculptural element is comprised of granite, concrete and pockets of soil and vegetation. The sculptural wall functions as a flood wall while softening the river’s edge with native vegetation and creating small niches that shelter birds and other wildlife living along the river. The sculptural wall is reminiscent of stone foundations from an earlier time, emerging through the steep side of the riverbank. The indigenous plantings as well as the patina of the stone encourage associations with the past.

We offer space inside the Grand Rapids Police Department, as a gallery environment. We are able to host both 2D and 3D works. In addition, due to the large mezzanine, we can offer space to artists who have pieces that need to be suspended overhead. There is also display space available inside 2 large front glass windows on the left side of the main entry glass doors on Monroe Center. The dimensions for the windows are roughly 5' by 8' each. All pieces displayed at the Grand Rapids Police Department are chosen by our Art Committee, a team of dedicated volunteers. We look forward to what artists will do to take advantage of this space.
