Visionaries and Malcontents
These pieces are part of a larger body of work that are portraits of individuals from the visual and performing arts who have been influential to me and to the creation of my own visual images. They are painted with very high contrast; to enable them to be viewed at any reasonable distance and also to reference the Polaroid film and silk screen process used by Andy Warhol in his celebrity images. Where Warhol used universally identifiable subjects in his paintings and prints, these pieces are intended to be a bit more ambiguous, to generate curiosity from the viewer. This ambiguity also is used as a device to make the paintings seem like that they could be portraits of anyone, to indicate a commonality even amongst the most celebrated of the faces. These paintings are meticulously glazed with oil color to respond to the values and the high contrast used to describe the features, and also to create a dynamic sense of depth and temperature. Each piece measures 35 x 35".
