The Power of Words
2012 ArtPrize EntryWe six calligraphers created a work of art using ancient techniques, tools, and materials. Compelling quotations, written on vellum, address how words affect life’s issues. We chose vellum as a writing surface in order to emulate the way monks created manuscripts, harkening back to a simpler time. The skins are mounted on a custom-made wood frame. Animals were not killed for this purpose; the skins are byproducts of commercial uses. Letters are hand-written in several scripts, from classical to modern. We applied a variety of pigments and gilded with 23-K gold. The layout of the quotations resulted in a contemporary composition. Materials used in this project are archivally safe. The Power of Words will last for centuries. Those who have never seen an illuminated manuscript will be able to reflect on the methods of communication in medieval times as represented in this work. Scribes Six are dedicated to building awareness of calligraphy as fine art. See our Facebook page, Scribes Six.
