Parallax for the Luddite Machinist
The main inspiration for “Parallax for the Luddite Machinist”came from a documentary on the making of Disney's film, Snow White. The Film's pioneering use of a 7-layer multiplaner camera, using the parallax effect, created the animation for the movie. I worked to recreate this effect by layering my illustrations in similar fashion. My title ends with the oxymoron “Luddite Machinist” recalling the Luddite movement that rebelled against the machines of the Industrial Revolution. I also struggle to remain true to my illustration roots while I infuse technology which allows me to manipulate & recycle my illustrations. My engineered textures are designed specifically for foreground/background interchangeability. The germ of my Illustrations comes from the “Scribble Monster” game I played as a kid. In the game, one person would do an initial scribble, the second would then refine that scribble into something. Typically, it ended up looking like a “monster”. An artistic Rorschach test.
