“Searching for the Key” (Letters Home) is an artwork regarding homelessness. This assemblage is made of many objects that are associated with homelessness. It consists of over 40 handwritten signs that were once held by individuals on the streets. It also includes a cardboard home, a shopping cart and aprox 40 life size photographs. Also paintings, beadwork and collage. It is adaptable to any space and can be displayed as a large installation or broken into several smaller artworks. We feel our artwork gives a face and a voice to a population that may be ignored because of discomfort or ignorance. Viewers feel very moved by the close up experience with the artwork. The homeless individuals represented have been interested and supportive. We have collected media release for the people we photographed. Since June 2010 it has been exhibited in 3 galleries, 9 churches and 2 other venues in SE Michigan including Zion Lutheran Church, Ann Arbor and St Francis of Assisi, Ann Arbor.

Venue & Connection Information

This installation is very adaptable. Several parts of the exhibit require light plugs. We are working on video interviews and have a digital exhibit prepared. We would like to have a table for use as a dinner table for our "homeless guests." We have many cardboard signs that can be easily attached without damage to walls.
