Drawing is the mainstay of my practice. Grounded in my dedication to cultural traditions related to paper-making and ink, my work relies on the fragile endurance of centuries-old practices. At the same time, I’m intrigued by the possibilities of expanding the vocabulary of drawing and challenging the artistic conventions of familiar materials. Reaching beyond brushes, pens, and typical tools, my methods include drawing with mist, ice, rain, and palm fronds, allowing the materials themselves to convey something of nature’s complex energy. My life has mostly been lived on a small island, instilling me with a respect and fascination for water, an important component of my work. Nature and art provide me a context and means to grasp otherwise inexpressible sensations and states of being, like fear, beauty, wonderment, and decay, which often coexist in opposition. I'm searching, rather than declaring what I already know. Through art, I chip away at my ignorance.
