Sherina Rodriguez Sharpe is a writer, editor, performer & educator from Detroit, MI. She is a 2018 MAP grant awardee, a 2017 Knight Arts Challenge awardee, a 2014 Kresge Theater fellow, a 2014 Cave Canem fellow, 2013 Voices of Our Nations Authors alum, executive director of Obsidian Blues and co-founder of the C R O S S R O A D collective. Her 2015 play “On Becoming Unfukwitable” forged new dramatic territory with a searing insight into how a daughter transcends molestation by her father. The production blends healing practices and multiple genres to create a group story-telling experience. Her ability to create a safe space for survivors makes “Unfukwitable” an insightful, evocative, liberating and transformative experience. Her latest project, *** *****, uses art to create a healing vibration to transcend trauma. Sherina is proud to have collaborated with her partner, Chace Morris (Mic Write). Together, the duo produced C R O S S R O A D at the Detroit Institute of Arts in October, 2017. Working with curators at the Detroit Institute of Arts & Charles Wright Museum of African-American History, Sharpe & Morris stepped up to create a unique performance investigating how rebel-art can capture grief and transform it into communal healing. C R O S S R O A D called forth a unflinching discussion about Detroit, justice and healing that landed the work on the Top 10 list of most influential moments at the DIA. Sherina, was further delighter to assist Chace & Cass Corridor Films, for ONUS CHAIN live, an intimate, award-winning performance of Morris' acclaimed visual album. Named "one of the best protest records of 2016" by Okayplayer, ONUS CHAIN explores the prolonged effects of police brutality on the spirit & imagines transforming fear & anger into independence, nation-building & communal power. Sherina is a universe-bender. She wields her art as a portal to connect with the wounded parts of herself, in hopes of serving as a role model for others longing to do the same. Her writing investigates cultural intersections, specifically in the patterns that emerge when class, gender, race & religion overlap, & confronts them head on. You can most often find Sherina engaging in high-level cuddling with her 4 chihuahuas, watching Beyonce live performances & judging your pound cake.
