Hood Adornment
2012 ArtPrize EntryI started painting on hoods about 2 years ago, after reusing a hood involved in a car crash. I loved the process after working on that piece, I wanted to create more. In my online search for mangled hoods, I came across a beautiful VW and Camaro hood from the late 60's and from then on became more interested in using classic car hoods as my canvas instead. I enjoy meeting people and learning about the history of the car that the hood came from. The shape and year help me determine the portrait or theme. I do repair the hoods myself, sanding them down before paint applications. I also do a lot of research online before I start a piece to apply more advanced techniques on the surface of a hood. Sometimes I'll watch videos, or even visit an auto repair shop in my area to ask specific questions if I don't know how to do something. Many times, though, I feel like the rust or deterioration help my work.
