Hidden in Plain Site: The Map to the City of Peace
There is wide debate among African American historians about rather quilts were used as encoded maps that help guide run-away slaves to freedom on an escape route called the "The Underground railroad". Hidden in plain site... is a take on this idea. Where the African American slaves used quilts to guide people to freedom I am trying to use paintings of quilts to guide people to spiritual freedom. Maps, a human brain and, or simple abstract shapes are some of the different connotations the piece evokes. Although the ideas in the piece are multifaceted the secret to interpreting the quilts lie at the center of the paintings where the four panels come together. In the end, it is a monument to faith in Christ, leading people away from the captivity of sin into the liberty , ( the city of Peace) in Christ. Sedrick
