Grand Illumination
2012 ArtPrize EntryGRAND ILLUMINATION is an abstract architectural sculpture representing the synergy of historic materials in a modern design. The body is literally carved from one of the granite steps that once welcomed you to the historic Grand Rapids Civic Auditorium. This reclaimed granite is adorned by three multi-colored lanterns. The antique Italian glass lenses originally came from 6 of the ceiling lights that illuminated the halls of our former convention center. It was my intent, with this piece, to honor the grandeur and timeless beauty of the Civic, while recognizing the modern beauty found in our current DeVos Place Convention Center.

This will be a floor-mounted piece. It does require electrical service to run the lights. The oject is estimated to weigh 500 to 600 pounds. It can be an exterior installation, but I would prefer a interior setting that is not in full light.
