I take the concept of grave rubbings -- which has been around for centuries --  and elevate it to high art. I travel to cemeteries and mausoleums all over Europe and the U.S. with loose canvases, which I place over a grave site and do a rubbing with an oil crayon to create these paintings -- so each name on the canvas has been to that specific grave site. I begin the work by prepping the background in my studio before I do the rubbings. In the course of completing a piece, I may rework the canvas in my studio and then continue the rubbings, but the paintings are essentially created at the grave site. I do three different types of paintings: compilations -- many disparate names but oftentimes with a sub-theme or interesting pairings (the majority), individual, or themed. "Compilation CSG No. 5" has well over 100 names, including Nikita Khrushchev (Moscow), Harriet Tubman (Michigan) and 'The Wizard of Oz' cast members. The painting took over 10 years to complete.
