It is Lovely This Time of Year

This work consists of over 2000 white ceramic houses randomly arranged on a white wall. White on white brings to mind a romantic snow-scape in the heart of winter; however, the white on white without the familiar order of a suburb builds uneasiness and a suggestion of disaster. The houses are not organized in a pattern. The randomness suggests an event that disrupts suburban order and leaves in its place something nomadic. The placement more closely resembles a crowd of people in a city plaza. The negative space of the wall is activated and becomes the pastoral landscape. This brings to mind how settled spaces expand and contract in relationship to the countryside. Houses symbolize safety and security by providing physical shelter and stable relationships with people. Because houses are so closely tied to the human experience, to see them without people creates anxiety or sense of loss. The houses represent the figure while simultaneously underscoring its peculiar absence.
