I am a mixed media artist living in Memphis, TN. Expressing an amalgamation of my diverse experiences and multiple roles – growing up and living in multiple cultures and communities – my artwork is also a quest for an identity that combines all aspects of my life into new realities – representing hope and renewal, explorations, and new discoveries. It represents an identity that evolves from a hybrid of varied experiences, cultures, and ideologies, and transcends them, defying all categorizations. I create mosaics from fragments of carvings that I designed from geometric patterns. The carvings are broken apart and then redesigned into structures that represent new realties. In some projects, I layer these structures with disparate elements. Geometric patterns, appropriated from the art and architecture of a region where I grew up, represent my cultural heritage and aesthetic traditions. These precise designs are juxtaposed with biomorphic and abstract shapes to create surrealistic installations that are infused with the western art traditions. Adding to the complexity of the formations and their possible meanings, each piece is created in multiple layers. My installations are contemplative environments that reveal multiple shifting perspectives as the viewer moves through them, and stepping back sees them as part of one big whole.
