Shaman

2012 ArtPrize Entry

‘Shaman’ is a tapestry in wood, with pieces fitted together in a pattern similar to the warp and weft of weaving. The shaman acts as intermediary between the natural world and the supernatural or spirit world. This work represents the shaman’s energy; it is a meditation inspired by the rhythmic chants and ecstatic dances of the shaman. In traveling the length of the piece, darkness gradually becomes light, matter becomes spirit. It is a horizontal journey, because spirit does not reside in the sky, it exists in partnership with the physical world, part of its fabric, part of our fabric. We are shaman. The work is made mostly of reclaimed materials, including wood salvaged from a church built in 1866 that was recently partly demolished for renovation. The materials, I believe, retain memories of their origins and history, which include not only the church itself but also the trees from which the lumber was made.
