Though I’ve never considered myself much of an artist, I have always been able to recognize a creative ability in myself. I’ve applied my talent to my passion for preservation, of both the environment and history, in a unique career track. I received a Master’s in Historic Preservation with a special focus in wood conservation and architectural history from Eastern Michigan University. My career has its roots in wood surface restoration, specifically in regards to historic furniture and architectural elements. My current position with Brightmark Studio allows me to exercise the specific finish skills that I have developed, as well as try my hand at design, all while maintaining focus on the preservation of architectural elements and the environment by creating artwork using recycled architectural materials. This year’s artprize entry is a collaborative piece with artist Corey Carpenter, meant to bring focus not only to the advanced and dying skill of marquetry, but also bring awareness to the severely threatened state of our world’s coral reefs.
