Forest

2012 ArtPrize Entry

Series of three large abstract wood sculptures 10 - 14 ft. tall and four smaller sculptures 3 -5 ft. Forest is an expression of how I feel when I am walking in the woods. The beauty of the natural world and the cycle of life and death that is exemplified so well in the forest inspires me to sculpt. The forms, shapes, and textures in my work reflect all of the elements in the ecosystem, from the rocks and dirt, the flowers and foliage, to the bugs boring holes in the wood. Dedicated in loving memory to Benno Robison and Steve Stocking. Benno’s unending creativity and stubborn refusal to live his life as anything but a true artist has influenced me since the day we met. The quiet wisdom and pure appreciation of nature Steve possessed inspired me in the creation of Forest. Special thanks to my beautiful wife and daughter, Jake Stocking, Les Scruggs, and my parents Jim and Barb Soet.
