Some Assembly Required
2012 ArtPrize EntryThis sculpture, “Some Assembly Required” is inspired by plastic brake-out toys. With this work I am making the point how we humans grow and develop from history. Our endeavor or urge is to accumulate and acquire knowledge, skills and wisdom to become more whole and complete as individuals as well as a society. “Some Assembly Required” is a metaphor for growth of culture and civilization, the complexity of accomplishments. The suspension of the figure in a framework of steel pipes evokes the feeling of floating through time and space, which partially defines history. My intent was to sculpt a more generic looking figure that could not be dated to any historic period. Although in order to support the reference to history I found inspiration in Michelangelo’s David. I used a similar yet more contemporary pose.
