Highland Park MI City of Trees

2012 ArtPrize Entry
Add to Collection

Highland Park, MI: City of Trees is the 3rd work of my Classical Soul series. With a hip-hop beat, uplifting jazz, funk and gospel styles mixing with classical, the music dramatizes the conflicts and dreams of black students caught between the streets and schools of my hometown surrounded by Detroit. It is classical mixing with familiar dance rhythms to highlight a modern crisis. The full performance by string sextet will be inside Royce Auditorium on Sat., Sept. 22 at 1:00pm sharp with Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra musicians. We want to win the classical category.
